The powerful story behind one of our most powerful hymns.

Thanks for posting the video giving the background of Horatio Spafford's song, "It Is Well."

I've been running a poll on my daily blog, Wordwise Hymns to find out what is people's favourite. Over the last 30 years or so, usually, "Amazing Grace," and "How Great Thou Art" have claimed the top spots. But in my own unscientific poll, "It Is Well" is ahead of both of these by a wide margin.

I'm wondering whether it has to do with some of the uncertainties of the times--terrorism, financial collapse, pandemics, and so on.

I think you hit the nail on the head. "It Is Well" is a hymn about finding that Peace Jesus promised in John 14:27 DESPITE all the bad things that happen in our lives (terrorism, economic ruin, disease, etc.).

In trying times, there is an odd comfort about "It Is Well" that is different than other hymns because it focuses on God's comforting our souls in crisis (where as the other grand old hymns are speaking of God's majesty and forgiveness).

Thanks for bringing that out!
