Did you know that right now in many countries around the world that there is serious oppression and abuse going on? I’m not talking about war or famine or disease. No, in many places around the glob women and girls are treated as property, abused (emotionally and sexually), and discarded…just because they are women.
Recently, CBS News correspondent Lara Logan spoke on 60 Minutes about her frightening first-hand experience with this very thing while on assignment in Egypt.
As Ms. Logan states, she was not aware of just how common and widespread this violence against women was until this happened. But she decided to talk about it, publicly, to make people aware that this is a serious issue that we should all have a hand in ending.
Did you know that the Seventh-day Adventist Church is a staunch and active advocate for stopping violence against women? They are through the EndItNow campaign. You’ve likely seen the banner displayed on our website.
Beginning in 2009, the Church has been generating a petition to the United Nations to take on this issue. On the ground, the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) has been helping victims in numerous countries. The Seventh-day Adventist Church is calling on on its members in over 200 countries to work in their own communities to create awareness and find solutions to this ever growing problem.
Seventh-day Adventists affirm the dignity and worth of each human being and decry all forms of physical, sexual, and emotional abuse.
Let this be a wakeup call to all of us. Let’s take this call of action, not just as Adventists or Christians, but as human beings, to put these principles into practice. Add your voice to the chorus of millions around the world today!
