I think that was the line in the movie... here's the crazy thing, it's true! Over the last couple of months we've focused on the book of Acts at deeper and if there's a theme that keeps popping in my head is "With power comes responsibility." Here's a brief summary in 4 parts of what we've covered so far.
1. Corporate renewal begins with an individual commitment.
2. God uses ordinary people in ordinary places to do extraordinary things.
3. When you are connected with God you cannot remain silent, you have to speak!
4. When you worship God, people will hear, and bonds will be broken.
As Jesus is leaving the disciples, He looks at them and realizes they are scared stiff. These guys are shaking because Jesus is leaving them. They are clueless. Questions such as, "What do we do now?" and "How do we do it?" keep circulating in their minds and I'm pretty sure they didn't want to sound ignorant asking Jesus those questions. They were afraid the others would look at them and say, "Dude! Where have you been the last couple of years?" So Jesus tells them in Acts 1:8 that they are going to receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on them... that's the moment they became responsible. They became responsible! Responsible for what? Responsible for becoming "Jesus" to the world.
The book of Acts is the story of what can happen when people plug into God's power... they became "Jesus" to their world. Miracles, transformed lives, improved communities, these things became the norm for the disciples and that becomes our story.
That same power available to the early church is available to us when we give the Holy Spirit more of US. When we plug into the power we become responsible for becoming "Jesus" in our culture. Let's take the Acts challenge and be the super heroes of our world.
